The Detroit Tigers scored a clutch extra innings win over their AL Central rivals the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday at Progressive Field in Cleveland, riding an unexpected three-run, go ahead home run from shortstop Trey Sweeney to a 7-2 victory.
The Tigers' win gave manager AJ Hinch's team a 57-34 record, tops in the Majors with the 56-34 Los Angeles Dodgers busy playing the Houston Astros for a chance to tie Detroit late Sunday afternoon.
Following the game, the Tigers made an MLB All-Star Game themed announcement of a historical nature that had fans responding with their comments on players they believe were unfairly left out.
"Four Tigers are on the AL All-Star roster: Javier Baez, Riley Greene, Tarik Skubal, and Gleyber Torres," the Tigers' PR account wrote on X.
"That is the most we've had in a season since 2015, when Miguel Cabrera, Jose Iglesias, J.D. Martinez and David Price represented us in Cincinnati."
The Tigers' four All-Star selections did not fully satisfy fans who shared their objections in the comments.
"Tork (Spencer Torkelson) and Mize should have made it too. Maybe even (Zack) McKinstry," a fan said.
"When was the last time we had six? That should have been the minimum, 6. Ridiculous," another said.
"Casey Mize should be on it," another said.
"Mize, (Will) Vest, McKinstry and Torkelson all have cases to be in," another added.
"Tork robbed WOW," another said.
"MLB hates Detroit," another fan said as Tigers fans digested the surprising news that only four players had been named to this year's team.
