Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman is approaching a return to the diamond after being sidelined with a quad strain since late May.
The 31-year-old was, somewhat surprisingly, selected for the All-Star Game despite only playing in 51 games this season. Bregman’s numbers are worthy, with a .299 batting average, a .938 OPS, a 158 OPS+, 11 home runs, and 22 walks to 42 strikeouts.
That amount of production in such a short time should have Boston fans optimistic that the team can turn around this frustrating campaign. Bregman’s arrival will be a big boost.
Here is what Bregman had to say via Sean McAdam of MassLive:
“I’m trending towards a return here really quickly. Whether it’s the end of this week or the first game after the break — one of those two. But hoping that it will be the end of this week.”
Rookie Marcelo Mayer has become the primary third baseman during Bregman’s absence. The top prospect has plenty of tools and has shown flashes both at the plate and defensively, but he is still a downgrade compared to Bregman right now.
The 22-year-old Mayer has a .214 batting average, a .665 OPS, an 82 OPS+, four home runs, and six walks to 34 strikeouts over 34 games and 98 at-bats.
Beyond climbing out of fourth place in the American League East and ameliorating a 47-45 record, the Red Sox already have to have the offseason on their minds. Bregman has an opt-out option, and while he could stay put and earn his $25 million, the All-Star nod should go a long way in increasing his value elsewhere.
For now, Boston should cherish Bregman’s health and look to capitalize on a suddenly wide-open AL East with the New York Yankees in a tailspin and the Toronto Blue Jays far from a perfect team.
