Led by Jacob Misiorowski, Brewers pitchers just did something never seen before in MLB

The Brewers quartet of arms in a 3-1 win over the Dodgers set a MLB record with their average fastball velocity

All gas, no brakes.

It’s likely that no team ever before in baseball history has taken that phrase as literally for an entire game as the Milwaukee Brewers just did.

The Brewers’ quartet of arms — Jacob Misiorowski, Jared Koenig, Abner Uribe and Trevor Megill — averaged a fastball velocity of 99.32 mph, the highest single-game average for a team in at least the pitch tracking era (since 2008).

The previous high, according to Baseball Savant was 99.30, set by the New York Mets on June 5, 2021 in a game started by Jacob deGrom.

Specific pitch velocity data doesn’t go back further than that, but given what we know about how velocity has climbed to unprecedented heights during the modern era, there is a relatively safe assumption to make: No team in baseball history has ever had a higher average fastball velocity in a game than the Brewers in their 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 8.

“That’s something special, huh?” said closer Trevor Megill, who slammed the door shut with a perfect ninth inning in which he averaged 99.9 mph with his four-seamer and topped out at 101.3 mph.

Jacob Misiorowski, of course, was the one who set the tone. In another dazzling start early in his big-league career, the right-hander clocked triple digits on half of his fastballs (21 of 42) and came out to an average of 99.7 mph as he struck out 12 over six innings.

“It’s so satisfying. It’s just a dream come true to do what I did," Misiorowski said. "It’s awesome that it was against the Dodgers. No words for it.”

It wasn’t even Misiorowski’s most electrifying outing in terms of sheer pitch speed, either; he averaged an eye-popping 100.4 mph during his second career start on June 20 when he took a perfect game into the seventh inning.

Koenig followed Misiorowski, who maneuvered around a jam in the sixth to finish his evening, and came out firing harder than he ever has, including a 99.5 mph sinker on his final pitch to outfielder James Outman.

Uribe’s fastball was a tick slower than usual as he worked a scoreless eighth, but nevertheless still ran in at 97.9 mph before Megill put a ribbon on the performance.
