The Houston Astros have trade interest in multiple left-handed bats to insert into a heavy right-handed-filled batting lineup.
The Houston Astros have hit a slump in July. With a record of 10-13 in the month, they are currently on a five-game losing streak and are looking for answers before the MLB trade deadline.
They are still fortunate to have the lead in the AL West with a record of 60-47, but the Seattle Mariners are narrowing the margin and are just three games behind Houston.
Rumors have gone around, and the Astros have shown their interest in finding offensive help. Specifically, a left-handed bat.
While multiple pitchers have also been on Houston's radar, their current lineup is filled with too many right-handed players.
As insiders have gathered information, it's been announced that the Astros have called with interest in multiple prospects that could fill that lefty need. Houston is targeting players such as the Minnesota Twins' switch-hitting utility man, Willi Castro, and the Arizona Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy, according to Astros writer Michael Schwab.
Castro, 28, was an All-Star in 2024. He broke a record for playing at least 25 games at five different positions in a single season, so the Astros would be able to plug him in at multiple different spots. In 2025, Castro has a .252 batting average, .343 on-base percentage, and a .762 OPS while hitting 10 home runs, 27 RBI, and stealing nine bases in 84 games.
McCarthy, 27, has struggled in 2025 after breaking out last season. He has struggled so much that the Diamondbacks demoted the outfielder to Triple-A for some time. Because of this, he's only played 33 games in the majors this season, totaling a .158 batting average, .232 on-base percentage, .509 OPS, and has hit two home runs and nine RBI.
