The San Francisco Giants have put together one of baseball's most dominant bullpens.

They ranked second in the majors in ERA (3.23), third in opponents' OPS (.643) and first in WHIP (1.16), led by emerging star Randy Rodriguez and a resurgent Camilo Doval. The group has been a major reason for this push for the postseason.

Things aren't so great for their starting rotation. With multiple injuries thinning their depth, as Landon Roupp is on the injured list and Hayden Birdsong was sent down to Triple-A Sacramento to regain his control, rival executives believe the Giants could take an unconventional route.

Teams rarely trade closers while in the postseason hunt, and Doval, who's under club control through 2027, remains a valuable late-inning weapon. However, Sammon and Baggerly noted that "subtracting from the bullpen could allow the Giants to address other pressing roster weaknesses, potentially down the stretch and in future seasons,".

Doval, an All-Star in 2023, has rebounded from a rough 2024 campaign in which he was demoted to Triple-A and posted a 4.88 ERA. He’s since regained form, recording a 3.22 ERA with 15 saves across 45 appearances. He’s also made notable improvements with slide steps, pitch clock adjustments, and controlling the running game.

With elite relievers like Jhoan Duran will be reportedly difficult to acquire, an opportunistic team might be able to take advantage.” The New York Mets and Detroit Tigers remain active in the high-leverage market, who could swing a trade for Doval.

While Doval is expected to remain with San Francisco past the deadline, executives across the league are watching closely in case the Giants decide to deal from a position of strength.
