Detroit Tigers acquire injured reliever Paul Sewald in trade with Cleveland Guardians

PHILADELPHIA — Paul Sewald is injured.

But the Detroit Tigers traded for him anyway.

The Tigers acquired Sewald, a veteran right-handed reliever, from the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday, July 31, in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The 35-year-old has been on the injured list since mid-July with a right shoulder strain, but the Tigers expect him to be healthy by early September.

Sewald missed more than two months due to a right shoulder strain, from late April to early July. He then suffered another right shoulder strain in mid-July.

When healthy, Sewald has a 4.70 ERA with four walks and 18 strikeouts across 15⅓ innings in 18 relief appearances in the 2025 season, earning two saves in four opportunities.

Sewald has a 4.11 ERA in his nine-year MLB career.

Right-hander Matt Manning — a former top prospect who had been banished to the bullpen in Triple-A Toledo — was designated for assignment by the Tigers to create a spot for Sewald on the 40-man roster. The Tigers selected Manning with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2016 draft.

Manning, 27, had a 6.04 ERA with 37 walks and 52 strikeouts across 50⅔ innings in 31 games (four starts) for the Mud Hens. He also had a 4.43 ERA in 50 starts with the Tigers during his four-year MLB career, from 2021-24.
