The Mets' bullpen has a 3.83 ERA this season. Edwin Díaz has been lights out as the team's closer this year. However, he has an opt-out after this season, and the Mets may be interested in adding a closer with control to potentially replace Díaz next year, and serve as his setup man this season.
There should be some solid relievers available at the trade deadline, but SNY's Joe DeMayo proposed this trade that would bring Pittsburgh Pirates All-Star David Bednar to the Mets:
- Mets receive: David Bednar
- Pirates receive: Drew Gilbert and Chris Suero
"Bednar is under team control through 2026, with one more year of arbitration remaining," wrote DeMayo. "In 2025 he's posted a 2.53 ERA in 32 innings with 45 strikeouts. His fastball is averaging 97.1 mph and he is in the 96th percentile in strikeout rate. Being able to shift down the roles of the likes of Reed Garrett, Ryne Stanek and Huascar Brazoban would only make the Mets' bullpen even more dangerous down the stretch."

Bednar struggled last season and at the start of this year. He was an All-Star in 2022 and 2023 and led the National League in saves in 2023. This year, he was sent to Triple-A because of his struggles, but has been great since returning. Since rejoining the big league team, he has a 1.74 ERA, 12 saves and three holds.
