Following their success on Day 1 of the Draft, the Rockies continued improving their roster with a Big Ten star. The dual-player out of USC is the No. 159 overall prospect.
Things at Coors Field are bleak — the Colorado Rockies’ 22-74 record is dead-last in the MLB and the team is on track for a third-straight 100-loss season. During seasons like these, fans say extra prayers before the MLB Draft.
Luckily for the Rockies’ faithful, Colorado’s acquisitions in the 2025 MLB Draft may bring hope for the future. With the fourth overall pick in the first round, Colorado selected No. 1 overall prospect, shortstop and Rockies legacy Ethan Holliday out of Oklahoma’s Stillwater High School. The selection earned the franchise an ‘A’ grade from CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson.
Colorado’s positive momentum continued with third round pick and the team’s first selection from the Big Ten conference: USC infielder and No. 159 overall prospect Ethan Hedges.
Hedges is a dual-player, a formidable third baseman with talent as a righthanded closer.
The 21-year-old earned numerous honors in his junior season as a Trojan, including All-Big Ten First Team and Big Ten All-Defensive Team. He led the Trojans (37-23, 18-12 Big Ten) to a fourth-place conference finish in the regular season and regional appearance at the Men’s College World Series, where USC fell to Oregon State in double elimination, 14-1 and 9-0.
The California native is a smart pick with a three pitch arsenal that offers Colorado options beyond third base.

“Hedges has the chance to be a very solid defender with good instincts at the hot corner,” his draft profile read. “Teams taking him on Day 2 will be interested in the bat and the hopes of teasing a bit more power out of him so he can profile at third, but that arm strength on the mound is a nice fallback.”
Hedges will be joined in Colorado by former Big Ten opponents, righthanded pitchers Luke Broderick (Nebraska) and Seth Clausen (Minnesota).
