Steve Allan became the Dick's Sporting Goods Open's first wire-to-wire champion and won by four strokes over Jason Caron.
ENDICOTT — Steve Allan won his first Dick’s Sporting Goods Open title with a steady final round that included a run of five birdies over the final 11 holes July 13 at En-Joie Golf Club.
This is Allan’s second PGA Tour Champions victory, following his first title at The Galleri Classic in March. He outlasted Jason Caron in the third round, shooting a 6-under-par 66 to finish the tournament at 18 under. Caron was 4 under Sunday to finish in second at 14 under, and Notah Begay III and Boo Weekley finished tied for third at 13 under.
Allan put himself in prime position for the title on Day 1 with a round of 9 under, his best on the PGA Tour Champions, and he built on the advantage throughout the weekend.
He secured the win with three straight birdies starting on No. 11, seemingly putting himself out of reach on the final five holes.
Allan is the first wire-to-wire champion at the Dick’s Open and the third multi-tournament winner on the tour this year.
Caron came up just short of his first PGA Tour Champions victory, and couldn't close the gap on Allan.
Boo Weekley finished tied for third a day after shaking up the leaderboard. Weekley started Saturday tied for 20th but made an incredible eight-birdie run and was two strokes behind Allan heading into the final round.
Charles Schwab Cup leader Miguel Angel Jimenez finished his weekend tied for 20th. Jimenez should still hold the top spot in the rankings despite an imperfect weekend, and has won four titles this year.
Denmark’s Soren Kjeldsen made a run for the title, jumping 26 spots to tie for fifth after shooting 8 under in his final round. His bogey-free round put him as high as third place during the front nine, before the top grouping picked up early back-nine birdies.
