It’s no secret that T.J. Watt wants a new contract from the Pittsburgh Steelers. While he’s set to have a base salary of $21 million in 2025, the 31-year-old is headed into the final year of his contract.

Naturally, Watt wants some more long-term security from the only pro team he’s ever known since arriving as the 30th overall pick in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. After leading the NFL in sacks in three of the past five seasons, it’s safe to say Watt has earned a new deal, and one that recognizes him as one of the best pass-rushers in the league today.

Yet, instead of paying him what he’s worth, team expert Mark Kaboly suggested on 93.7 The Fan that the Steelers are shopping the 2021 Defensive Player of the Year instead. Kaboly and the radio show host were discussing what type of trade return the Steelers could fetch for a player of Watt’s caliber, and that’s when the golden nugget dropped out of his mouth.

“[T]hey are obviously inquiring to see what that might be.”

The idea of the Steelers trading the face of their franchise seems unfathomable at this point. Yet, with the market for pass-rushers reaching $40 million in annual average value, the Steelers may very well be deciding between handing out another big payday this season or trading their best defender of the past decade.
