Michigan State baseball left-hander Joseph Dzierwa was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the second round of the 2025 MLB Draft, at No. 58 overall.

The 21-year-old Haskins, Ohio, native has been highly touted as a prospect since he became the Spartans’ top starter as a freshman in 2023. This past season, he improved his strength, adding 2 mph to his fastball, according to MLB Pipeline. His talents are only helped by his 6-foot-8 frame, helping him deceive batters.

Michigan State's Joseph Dzierwa delivers a pitch during a NCAA Big Ten Conference baseball game against Iowa, Friday, May 12, 2023, at Duane Banks Field in Iowa City, Iowa.

Dzierwa entered the transfer portal at the end of the 2024 season and was contemplating an offer from Vanderbilt, but opted to return to the Spartans. In 2025, he was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and was a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten pick with an 8-3 record, 2.36 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 91⅔ innings pitched across 15 starts.

With his selection, Dzierwa becomes the highest-drafted Spartan pitcher since left-hander Mark Mulder went No. 2 overall to the then-Oakland Athletics in 1998. This is the second time in three seasons that Michigan State has had a player taken in the second round: Shortstop Mitch Jebb went No. 42 overall to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2023 MLB Draft.
