Celtics predicted to lose five-time All-Star to West Coast rival

Boston might lose a big name in the near future.

The Boston Celtics have had a rough offseason, but that doesn’t make parting ways with a franchise icon any easier.

Over a large chunk of the past decade, Al Horford has been helping the Celtics inch toward an NBA championship. After years of heartbreak, Horford and the Celtics finally reached the mountaintop in 2024.

Coming off an NBA title, the Celtics entered last season as the favorite to come out of the East again and defend their title in the NBA Finals. However, disaster struck in the second round when Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles and the Celtics fell to the New York Knicks in six games.

That sent the Celtics into an offseason of change. With Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis being the first core players out, Luke Kornet soon followed in free agency.

While Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Derrick White are still around, there is little hope that Horford will be joining that group again next season. In a recent Bleacher Report article, Greg Swartz listed the Golden State Warriors as Horford’s top landing spot.

While Swartz wrote that the Warriors might be holding off on Horford in hopes of making a big swing for a star, the former All-Star could be a perfect fit as the team’s starting center. Regardless of where Horford lands, anywhere other than Boston would still be a crushing blow to Celtics fans still holding out hope.

Considering Boston’s title chances are slim next season and Horford could be on the verge of retirement, one last ride for a contending team could be the 2024 champion’s top priority, and Boston simply doesn’t fit.
