Mark Leiter Jr. hit the injured list.
Yankees Fans Livid After Announcement on $2 Million Reliever originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Yankees' injury woes have been well-documented this season, with season-ending injuries to Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt testing their depth, and lengthy injuries to Oswaldo Cabrera, Luis Gil, Marcus Stroman and Giancarlo Stanton not exactly helping.
The bullpen has gotten the brunt of it; in recent weeks, Jake Cousins was announced to be out for the season, and relievers Yerry de los Santos, Ryan Yarbrough and Fernando Cruz hit the injured list.
As a result, the Yankees' trade deadline shopping list has grown, and a recent announcement only expanded that list.
The Yankees moved reliever Mark Leiter Jr to the 15-day injured list prior to Tuesday's game with a left fibular head stress fracture.
According to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch, Leiter Jr sustained the fracture in his left leg covering first base in the Yankees' 5-4 loss in extra innings to the Reds on June 24th, and has not been given a timetable to return.
Leiter Jr had struggled severely on the mound in June and July, pitching to a 5.63 and 9.00 ERA, respectively, ballooning his ERA to 4.46 compared to 3.55 at the start of June.
Leiter took the loss in three straight appearances from June 24 to July 1, giving up seven runs, five earned in 1 2/3 innings, which on its own raised his ERA from 3.66 to 4.68.
One post on X (formerly Twitter) noted that the Yankees' defense hasn't exactly helped Leiter Jr out, recording a -10 Outs Above Average (OAA) this season when Leiter Jr is on the bump.
"How bout DFA Leiter," one fan posted.
"Boone’s favorite bullpen toy is now gone," wrote another.
The Yankees called up Clayton Beeter from Triple-A in the wake of the news.
