The New York Yankees are expected to show interest in veteran third baseman Ryan McMahon and many other teams around the league.
According to Boston.com, the Red Sox could also get in the mix for the left-handed hitting infielder, adding that while he's typically a third baseman, he's also played some first base throughout his career.
With the Red Sox needing a first baseman, there's reason to believe that McMahon could be a decent option despite him being one of the more overrated players in Major League Baseball.
“McMahon might be a bit of an outside-the-box option for the Red Sox. Of course, they don’t need a third baseman with Alex Bregman returning soon. But McMahon has some experience at first base, with it being his primary position when he entered the league in 2017. The 30-year-old is also under contract for two more seasons, potentially giving the Red Sox a backup option if Bregman leaves in free agency this offseason.
“The lefty has shown some decent pop over his career, hitting at least 20 homers in each of the last five seasons (excluding the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign). McMahon has largely struggled at the plate this season, hitting .209 with a .684 OPS and 12 homers in 88 games this season,” they wrote.
McMahon has yet to post an OPS+ above 100 in any season of his career, which is a telling sign, considering he plays at Coors.
He currently leads the National League in strikeouts with 113 and has an OPS+ of 85.
Despite the below-average play at times, many have suggested that he'll be in high demand at the deadline and be traded for a decent package.
