Angel Reese leans on guard skills to lead young Sky

Angel Reese has worn many hats throughout her basketball career, from standout high school star at Saint Frances Academy in Baltimore to key contributor at Maryland and LSU under Kim Mulkey.

Now in her second WNBA season with the Chicago Sky, the 23-year-old forward is using those experiences to shape her game. Already a two-time WNBA All-Star, Reese continues to expand her skill set as a key piece of Chicago’s lineup.

As the Sky prepare to face the Washington Mystics on Tuesday, Washington Post WNBA reporter Kareem Copeland spoke with Reese about her development and how her experience at the guard position still plays a role.

"Been talking to Angel bout playing like a big guard since she was at Maryland," Copeland wrote. "She talked about that continued progression and how they’ve really leaned into her as a playmaker."

Reese echoed that sentiment, crediting her guard background for her growth.

"It's made my job easier now. I was a guard coming out of high school, and just getting back into that. I've always been the type to adapt to my environment and do whatever the team needs," she said.

She also reflected on the early days of her college career.

"At Maryland, I had to be the 5 player, so I just worked there and have had a successful career with it."

Reese was selected seventh overall by the Sky in the 2024 WNBA Draft. She played all 34 games in her rookie year, averaging 13.6 points and a league-best 13.1 rebounds per game.

Chicago has had a rocky start to the 2025 season, entering Tuesday’s matchup with a 5-12 record. After facing the Mystics, the Sky return home Wednesday to take on Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings.
