Unsurprisingly, New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is headed to the All-Star Game for the fifth time in seven years.

Although Alonso is familiar with the All-Star process, this year’s trip to Atlanta will be slightly different. Alonso confirmed that he turned down an opportunity to participate in his sixth Home Run Derby.

Alonso has competed in the last five Home Run Derbies, winning in 2019 and 2024. He’s one of only four players with multiple Home Run Derby victories.

“I want to fully be able to enjoy the festivities,” Alonso told reporters. “That’s really what it boils down to.

“As fun as it is, for me, it’s not necessarily the work or the swings,” Alonso added. “It’s more the adrenaline spikes up and down. So having that Monday off … I’m really excited to have those days off.”

Atlanta Braves superstar Ronald Acuña Jr., Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood, and Minnesota Twins standout Byron Buxton have all committed to this year’s Derby.

It’s been another strong campaign for Alonso, who entered Tuesday batting .287 with 20 home runs, 73 RBIs, an NL-high 25 doubles, and a .923 OPS. He's well on pace for his fourth 100-RBI season, and he's only seven doubles away from a new career high.

Alonso’s 3.1 bWAR trails only the Braves’ Matt Olson (3.7) and Chicago Cubs’ Michael Busch (3.5) among full-time first basemen.

Alonso made it clear that he intends to participate in another Home Run Derby if given the chance, though he’ll admittedly be selective.

“If an All-Star Game happens at Citi Field or at another park that I love to hit at, like Fenway or Wrigley, for sure,” Alonso said.
