Astros trade pitch lands All-Star Game starter to replace injured Yordan Alvarez

It remains uncertain when Yordan Alvarez will return for the Houston Astros.

One could argue that the Houston Astros shouldn't trade any of their top prospects due to the poor state of their farm system, but on the other hand, Houston appears to have another opportunity to win a World Series.

The Astros recently swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in Los Angeles, demonstrating why they remain one of the best teams in the league. At 55-35 and 8-2 over their last 10 as of July 7, the Astros are now seven games ahead in the American League West over the second-place Seattle Mariners.

It's all but guaranteed that the Astros will add to their roster at the deadline, but it remains uncertain who they might add.

In a recent trade idea from Dylan Sanders of Sports Illustrated, they'd get together with the Baltimore Orioles in a blockbuster deal for Ryan O'Hearn. The trade would send Miguel Ullola and Zach Cole to Baltimore.

“Houston must add a left-handed bat at the deadline. While there are a couple of intriguing options, O'Hearn might be the best fit. The 31-year-old can DH, play a little first and play left field. That gives them a little bit of flexibility when Alvarez comes back from his lengthy absence...

“Ullola is a perfect player to float in front of Baltimore as an elite pitcher prospect that could be ready for MLB next year,” he wrote.

O'Hearn has been one of the more underrated players in Major League Baseball this season and just got an All-Star nod.

He deserved that, as he's done nothing but swing the bat at a high level throughout the year.

It might be fair to note that regression could be coming for him, as he's hitting better than he typically has, but he also had a 122 OPS+ in 2023 and a 120 OPS+ in 2024. Even if his 139 OPS+ goes down to the 120 mark, O'Hearn is still a very good player.

With Yordan Alvarez injured, the Astros could use the left-handed slugger.
