Mets' Paul Skenes trade pitch could shake up MLB with huge blockbuster deal

Paul Skenes in Queens?

Paul Skenes in Queens has a great ring to it.

Could the New York Mets really trade for the Pittsburgh Pirates' superstar right-handed pitcher?

ESPN's David Schoenfield thinks the Mets have enough of a farm system to at least give themselves a chance.

He pitches a five-player offer from the Mets to the Pirates: Jett Williams, Jonah Tong, Nolan McLean, Ronny Mauricio and Carson Benge.

Pittsburgh doesn't seem like it'll be in a rush to move Skenes, even in the midst of another brutal season.

Skenes is under club control for another four seasons, and the Pirates can't just punt on the best player they'll get in this generation. They have to try and find a way to build around him.

But if things get worse, if the Pirates feel even less hope in the players they have coming up through the minors, maybe they do hit the reset button.

That package from the Mets amounts to five future big leaguers, a couple who could turn into stars. It's certainly a big-time offer.

It may still not be enough for Skenes, but at some point, Pittsburgh is going to have to choose a path. A team like the Mets will be waiting.
