Ex-Cardinals Great Adam Wainwright Makes Wild End of Season Prediction originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Former Cardinals great Adam Wainwright knows a thing or two about playing in the postseason. During his 18-year career in St. Louis, the right-hander not only helped the Cardinals to a World Series victory in 2006, but reached the postseason 12 times.
Saturday, as the Cardinals hosted the Chicago Cubs for a three-game set, Wainwright gave St. Louis fans hope by taking to social media and foreshadowing the team's playoff chances.
I’m looking at the schedule. I’m calling it now. The @Cardinals shock everybody and are playing for a wild card spot on the last series of the season against the @Cubs Cubs-Cards last 3 days of the regular season at Wrigley could be wild

"I'm looking at the schedule," Wainwright wrote. "I'm calling it now. The @Cardinals shock everybody and are playing for a wild card spot on the last series of the season against the @Cubs. Cubs-Cards last 3 days of the regular season at Wrigley could be wild."
Fans, however, were a little skeptical of Wainwright's prediction.
"Crazy talk, Waino!" one user replied.
"Bartender.... I'll have what he's having." Another person joked.
"There is a 0% chance of this happening. Not literally, but realistically." Someone suggested.
While a stretch, Wainwright may not be too far off in his prediction.
After taking two of three from the Cubs at Busch Stadium this weekend, the Cardinals (60-59) sit three and a half games out of the final wild card spot, currently occupied by the struggling New York Mets (63-55). The Cubs (67-50) currently lead the Wild Card race, followed by the San Diego Padres (66-52).
The Cardinals upcoming schedule lines up pretty well for Oli Marmol and company. Beginning a three-game set tonight against the Colorado Rockies, the Cardinals have 43 games remaining, 22 at home and 21 on the road. Four of their six opponents this month - the Rockies, Miami Marlins, Tampa Bay Rays and Pittsburgh Pirates - have losing records.
September, however, will be the ultimate test. After a pair of home series against the Athletics and San Francisco Giants, the Cardinals close the month against five teams currently sporting a .500 or better record. This includes a home-away series against the division leading Milwaukee Brewers.
If the Cardinals want to see Wainwright's prediction come to fruition, however, they'll likely need to see improvement from a pitching staff that went 8-16 with a 5.00 ERA last month.
