This is what was supposed to happen.

The Seattle Mariners took a couple of big swings before the MLB trade deadline in their deals for Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez.

It's still remarkable to see it coming to fruition, though, especially with Geno still ice cold since his arrival back in Seattle.

Even with that, the Mariners have the best record in the American League since the trade deadline, at 10-1.

Seattle has won eight in a row after its shutout victory in Baltimore on Tuesday night.

George Kirby was brilliant, continuing a great stretch of work for him on the mound.

And as it turns out, the Mariners actually only needed the lone run they scored in the top of the first inning.

Randy Arozarena led off the game by singling and stealing second. And then with two outs, Naylor lined a sharp single to bring Arozarena home.

Seattle didn't score again, and it didn't even matter.

The Mariners, at the exact time of the game's ending, were half a game back of the Astros in the AL West, with Houston playing later in the night.

Seattle has caught up, and even if the Astros stay ahead for now, this is a division race that is on fire and has the potential to be thrilling down the stretch.

That is, if the Mariners cool down at all. Because if they keep playing the way they are right now, they could legitimately go and win the World Series.

It's hard to bet against a team this hot right now, unless you're picking their on-fire counterpart in the NL, the Milwaukee Brewers.

You've gotta love it when the two most locked in teams in baseball are the Mariners and Brewers. This sport is the best.
