It’s not just the Tigers that are impressing this year. It’s the fans. And MLB.com’s Will Leitch made sure to say it out loud.
In this week’s Power Rankings, where the Tigers once again landed at No. 1, Leitch carved out a moment to recognize Detroit’s long-suffering, finally-celebrating fan base.
“It still must be shouted out how well Tigers fans — who, as we’ve seen from some of their fanbase travels to road games this year, are really enjoying this breakthrough season — showed up in the All-Star voting this year,” Leitch wrote. “How many people would have ever predicted two Tigers outfielders getting voted in? There will be so many Tigers in Atlanta. And very deservingly so.”
He’s not wrong
. The Tigers are sending four players to the All-Star Game — three as starters: Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter, and Gleyber Torres (who fans have embraced after he was tossed to the curb by the New York Yankees and their fans).
They’ll be joined by Tarik Skubal, the reigning AL Cy Young winner, making it Detroit’s largest All-Star contingent since 2015.
Leitch added that this group rivals the 2015 Tigers squad that sent Miguel Cabrera, J.D. Martinez, David Price, and Jose Iglesias to the Midsummer Classic. It’s been a long wait for fans to feel this kind of momentum — and this time, the fan base is getting as much credit as the roster.
And there might be more on the way.
If replacements are needed, Leitch speculated that Zach McKinstry, Spencer Torkelson, or Casey Mize could still sneak in. All three have been key contributors to a Tigers team that continues to lead, surprise, and dominate — all while bringing a little swagger back to Comerica Park.
