Pirates’ Paul Skenes has more Wins Above Replacement than he has actual wins

This is nearly impossible.

Wins are the old-age stat. Wins Above Replacement qualifies as the new-age.

Paul Skenes is having quite the season for the Pittsburgh Pirates when you compare the two.

So far in 2025, the righty ace has 4.8 Wins Above Replacement. He has just four wins in his record.

That's nearly impossible, although the stats only have some layer of correlation, clearly.

WAR accounts for Skenes' entire body of work, irrespective of what Pittsburgh's offense has done. And a 1.94 ERA through 19 starts with healthy strikeout numbers is a super valuable pitcher.

The Pirates just haven't scored in Skenes' outings, so he has rarely won.

The big right-hander has gotten a loss decision this season in two games he allowed two runs and two games he allowed one run.

Over the weekend, he threw five scoreless innings and struck out 10 in a game the Pirates eventually lost 1-0.

It's a bad sign for Pittsburgh if Skenes gets to the end of the year and still has more WAR than wins.
