Despite signing James Trafford this summer and Ederson remaining as number one, new reports claim Manchester City are interested in Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Premier League giants are certainly not finished making headlines in the transfer market, whether that be in the form of arrivals or departures from their squad, and even after securing their goalkeeping ranks with the high-profile return of James Trafford from Burnley.

While Ederson is poised to continue as Pep Guardiola’s first choice for the 2025/26 season, City’s recruitment department is known for forward-planning, and the opportunity to land one of world football’s most recognisable goalkeepers has seemingly sparked internal discussions.

Manchester City’s depth between the posts remains strong on paper, but uncertainty still lingers. Stefan Ortega’s future is far from settled, with the German attracting interest from both the Premier League and Bundesliga as he seeks regular first-team action.

The exit of long-serving backup Scott Carson earlier in the summer, replaced by Chelsea’s Marcus Bettinelli, further underlines the reshaping of City’s goalkeeping department, and with four stoppers within the ranks, Ortega is now deemed as the most likely to vacate.

Gianluigi Donnarumma has long been admired at the Etihad Stadium, with his blend of experience, physical stature, and UEFA Champions League pedigree making him a tempting option in any market scenario.

Even with Ederson still in Manchester at present, Pep Guardiola and sporting director Hugo Viana have been known to act decisively when top talent becomes available, particularly when transfer fees and contractual circumstances create an opening.

According to the information of Football Italia, Gianluigi Donnarumma has been told to leave Paris Saint-Germain with more clarity over the next week amid the imminent arrival of Lucas Chevalier from LOSC Lille.

Having failed to agree a new contract beyond June 2026 with the Italy international goalkeeper, Donnarumma remains a long-term target for Pep Guardiola despite Manchester City’s existing options in the role.

However, it is stressed that City will want to ‘give it a go anyway over the next few days’, with an asking price expected to be around €25 million to €30 million. In the event of a rush for his signature next summer as a free agent, it is claimed City would be in the front row.

Elsewhere, there is said to have been an approach made by Bayern Munich over the last few days, while Chelsea are also interested but so far have not made any formal steps to pursue the player.

If City do make an approach this month, the move would be viewed as both a statement signing and a strategic play for the future. With Donnarumma still only 26 years old, Manchester City could secure a world-class option capable of starting immediately, and perhaps also opening up a door for Ederson to leave – amid ongoing interest from Turkey.

The relatively modest asking price – compared to modern market norms for elite players – may encourage City to act now rather than wait until the goalkeeper becomes a free agent, when competition is expected to intensify significantly.

For Pep Guardiola, the decision could come down to timing and squad dynamics. The common feeling in various quarters, despite the latest links, remains that City will continue to put faith in Ederson and James Trafford as their options for the immediate term.
