Hansi Flick sees Barcelona summer signing as a genuine option for the No. 9 role – report

Barcelona’s summer signing Marcus Rashford has now convinced manager Hansi Flick that he can be a reliable option as a number 9 this season, claims journalist Santi Gimenez through his update in AS. 

The outlet assures that while he was initially signed with a different role in mind, the English forward has changed opinions within the camp thanks to his efforts in training and pre-season matches, especially during the Asian tour.

When Barcelona made Rashford’s arrival official, it seemed clear that his role would be limited to the wings or as an attacking reinforcement. 

However, his performances have offered Flick a fresh tactical option, especially as a backup striker.

Rashford to share Lewandowski’s burden?

It is known that Robert Lewandowski remains Flick’s main striker and one of his most trusted players. However, the manager knows that depending entirely on the 36-year-old for an entire season is risky.

The Polish forward showed signs of fatigue in the second half of last season and has already been ruled out of the Joan Gamper Trophy match due to physical issues. At his age, playing 60 intense matches a season is unrealistic.

This is where Rashford’s versatility comes into play. While Ferran Torres was expected to take up the number 9 role in some games, and Dani Olmo offers flexibility depending on the system, Rashford has now put himself firmly in contention. 

His speed, physicality and finishing ability have impressed Flick, who now sees the Englishman as more than just a winger.

With Lewandowski likely to be carefully managed this season, Rashford could play a crucial role in leading the line when needed.
