The Toronto Blue Jays hold a three-game lead over the Boston Red Sox for first place in the AL East as they push for a return to the postseason.

A major factor in Toronto’s success this season has been the resurgence of George Springer, following a disappointing 2024 campaign. Last season he posted a .220 batting average and a .674 OPS — the lowest marks of his 12-year career.

Over 101 games this season, Springer is batting .291 with an .889 OPS, 18 home runs and 57 RBIs. He has been a driving force behind an offense averaging 4.7 runs per game — eighth best in MLB.

The 35-year-old veteran is in his fifth season with the Blue Jays after debuting with the Houston Astros in 2014. Springer is one of the more formidable right-handed sluggers in the league, earning four All-Star selections and two Silver Slugger Awards.

George Springer Takes Key Step in Recovery From Concussion

However, the Blue Jays are without Springer for an extended period for the first time this season. He suffered a concussion when he was hit in the head by a pitch during a game on July 28 and was placed on the 7-day concussion injured list on Aug. 1, retroactive to July 29. Toronto is 2-4 without him in the lineup during this stretch.

Ahead of Monday’s series opener against the Colorado Rockies, the team shared news on its designated hitter.

"George Springer is slated to get in a rehab game Wednesday."

Springer’s Turnaround Has Been Crucial to Toronto’s Success

This marks an important step in Springer’s recovery. The first day he is eligible to return to the lineup on Tuesday.

If all goes well during his rehab appearance, a return could be imminent. In his absence, manager John Schneider has used the designated hitter spot to provide partial rest days for stars Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
