The New York Yankees are urged to acquire a star starting pitcher from a struggling AL team to help replace Clarke Schmidt.
The New York Yankees will likely look to bolster their rotation after the injury news to Clarke Schmidt.
Schmidt is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery and will be done for the entire 2025 Major League Baseball season and into the 2026 season. With Schmidt injured, MLB analyst James Nolan of FanSided urges the Yankees to acquire Joe Ryan from the Minnesota Twins.
“Joe Ryan has been dominant for the Minnesota Twins this season,” Nolan wrote. “He’ll be one of the most coveted pitchers at the deadline because of his ability and team control. He won’t hit free agency til 2028.

“The Twins starter would likely require a lucrative package to acquire, considering all the factors. Cashman would likely have to include Jones, along with other top prospects. At this point, with all the injuries, the Yankees would be foolish not to put together something to trade for Ryan,” Nolan added.
Ryan is just 29 and it likely would cost quite a bit to acquire him due to the team control. However, Ryan would help solidify the Yankees rotation and give them another legit playoff starter, which is a need after Schmidt suffered the injury.
Ryan is 8-4 with a 2.76 ERA in 18 games, including 17 starts. He has a 0.89 WHIP. In his MLB career, he’s 41-30 with a 3.71 ERA.
Ryan is making just $3 million this season.
