With the 2025 MLB Trade Deadline officially in the rearview mirror and many notable players now on new teams, the final stretch of the season is officially here. With the end of the season just a month away, a lot of teams will look to finish the season strong to make it to the playoffs. The Boston Red Sox, who are 62-51 and currently own the first AL Wild Card spot, are one of those teams.
Boston is looking to make the playoffs for the first time since 2021 and is on pace to do so. However, they had a rather uneventful trade deadline, leading to a lot of criticism from fans. On Monday, a new report surfaced suggesting that the Red Sox were close to acquiring an All-Star pitcher ahead of the deadline, but it ultimately failed to go through.
Before the trade deadline, the Red Sox were linked to numerous pitchers. Ultimately, they acquired Steven Matz from the St. Louis Cardinals and Dustin May from the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, they were reportedly also close to landing Joe Ryan from the Minnesota Twins, but nothing came to fruition due to not properly expressing their willingness to trade some of their high-end prospects (h/t Jeff Passan of ESPN).
“Boston came close. The Red Sox were willing to part with a number of high-end prospects to land right-hander Joe Ryan from the Minnesota Twins. But that wasn’t expressed until the deadline was nearing, and the Twins were so deep in other talks to disassemble their roster, the prospect of moving Ryan had lost appeal.”
Instead of landing Ryan, who ended up remaining with the Twins, the Red Sox walked away from the deadline as arguably one of the biggest losers. Regardless, they are still riding a lot of momentum and have won eight of their last 10 games. Hopefully for the team, they will be able to finish the season strong and go on a deep playoff run despite their failed trade.
