Aaron Boone signals Yankees need help before trade deadline arrives

Aaron Boone didn’t name names, but the message to the front office was clear.

Before Friday afternoon’s series-opener against the Mets, Aaron Boone said the thing out loud. The New York Yankees manager said the part that’s been hanging in the air for weeks, tucked between every injury update and every “we’ll be fine” postgame presser.

“We’re not a complete team,” Boone told reporters.

It was tucked into comments defending his declaration about the Yankees being the best team in the league after being swept by the Toronto Blue Jays. Yankees may have missed it in their rage over the Yankees losing and blind hatred toward Boone and Brian Cashman.

But that was a very subtle message that the Yankees front office has to get him help.

Sure, he followed it with the usual qualifiers. That there’s time. That he believes in the group. That they’ve shown what they can be.

But make no mistake, this is the manager’s version of a trade deadline plea. It’s similar to Aaron Judge’s reminder last month that the Yankees are a team that goes out and get help.

Boone isn’t the kind to go scorched earth. He is, in fact, the complete opposite. He’s positive and believes in managing with positivity and encouragement. He will not call out players, he will not criticize his roster, and he will not point out shortcomings of the front office’s roster building.

But he is not blind.

The rotation is cracked. The lineup is held together with optimism and Aaron Judge’s bat. The defense has been out of position. The bullpen is wrapped and iced up like it’s already October. The Yankees need help.

“I feel like we have the makings of a special group,” Boone said. “But we’re not that right now.”

No, they’re not. They’re a team with stars playing out of position, rookies being asked to do too much, and more questions than answers in the middle innings.

This team needs a shake-up. It needs a tune-up. Reinforcements. The kind of trade deadline help that turns “makings of something special” into something real.

Boone’s not calling out his bosses directly. He doesn’t need to. The message came through loud and clear. This team can’t finish the job without help. Now it’s up to the front office to prove they heard him.
