Pittsburgh Pirates trade closer David Bednar to New York Yankees

Another closer shipped at the deadline.

David Bednar

The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded their closer, David Bednar. The 30-year-old, who joined the Pirates back in 2021, is now a member of the New York Yankees.

The lefthander has thrown in 42 games this season and has allowed 32 hits over 38 innings pitched. He has struck out 51 batters while walking just 10. The Pirates are 47-62 and in last place in the National League Central.

In his career, he is 14-23, but has 101 saves, while blowing just 16 in his career. This season, his ERA is at 2.37.

His last outing with the Pirates came on July 28. In that game, he picked up the save, but allowed three hits and a run on the road at San Francisco.

The Yankees started Thursday four games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East race. New York led the American League wildcard top spot by a game over the Boston Red Sox.

Bednar could take over for Devin Williams in the closer role. Williams is 3-3 on the season, with a 5.01 earned run average. He has thrown 41.1 innings and allowed 23 earned runs. In his last outing, he gave up a two-run home run to blow the save against Tampa Bay.

Regardless, Bednar will join Williams and Luke Weaver for the final three innings of games for New York.

Top catching prospect Rafael Flores and two others will go to Pittsburgh in the deal.
