The Toronto Blue Jays’ bullpen has been one of the more dependable units in baseball this season. With a 3.72 ERA, 1.210 WHIP, and 31 saves, it looks strong on paper.

Still, injuries to key pieces and inconsistent late inning performances have pushed the front office to consider reinforcements before the trade deadline.

Rather than chase big name stars, the Blue Jays are expected to target reliable, mid tier pitchers who can stabilize the bullpen without breaking the bank. Mitch Bannon of The Athletic reports, “There’s depth in the lower tiers of the relief market this year, too, with several set up men and middle relievers rattling off top seasons. The Jays, expected to add multiple relievers at the deadline, will likely trade for at least one from this range.”

Two standout options fit that mold.

Danny Coulombe of the Minnesota Twins has emerged as one of the most consistent relievers in the league. The left hander owns a 1.16 ERA and 1.96 FIP, generating weak contact and limiting damage with sharp command. A pending free agent, Coulombe offers postseason experience and could immediately slot into a high leverage role.

Then there is Phil Maton. The veteran right hander has carved out a strong season with the St. Louis Cardinals, posting a 2.35 ERA with underlying numbers that rival top tier closers. A newly added sinker and more dynamic breaking pitches have fueled his transformation.

With Yimi Garcia, Nick Sandlin, Paxton Schultz and Ryan Burr battling injuries or inconsistency, Toronto’s bullpen depth is being stretched thin. Coulombe and Maton may not carry marquee status, but their production suggests they could be impactful additions. The Jays do not need flashy arms they need dependable pitchers, and the market is offering just that.
