The Houston Astros are well off in the standings, but they have a third base problem.

Starting third baseman Isaac Paredes (hamstring) is on the 10-day IL, but general manager Dana Brown said on Sunday that the injury is “a little bit more severe than we projected,” via The Athletic's Chandler Rome. That could jeopardize Houston's first-place status if it doesn't acquire a replacement player by Thursday's Trade Deadline.

Paredes is slashing .259/.359/.470 with 19 homers and 50 RBI over 94 games, while backup Mauricio Dubon is slashing .258/.304/.399 with six homers and 22 RBI over 84 contests. Additionally, fellow backup Shay Whitcomb is slashing .107/.107/.214 with one homer and one RBI over 18 games.

Although Dubon has a similar batting average, these numbers prove that the Astros don't have another player as good as Paredes at the position. However, they have their eyes on Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Eugenio Suárez, via Rome.

"Suárez is the most straightforward way to address Paredes’ potential season-long absence and, according to multiple league sources, the Astros have at least checked in with the Arizona Diamondbacks to make their interest known," he reported.

The 34-year-old is slashing .247/.319/.579 with 36 homers and 87 RBI over 104 games. He's tied for fourth in baseball in homers and leads in RBI.

Rome also reported that the Astros are interested in Minnesota Twins utilityman Willi Castro, who's slashing .254/.342/.423 with 10 homers and 27 RBI over 83 contests.

Houston is four games ahead of the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers for first place in the AL West. It currently holds the AL's third seed, a half-game behind the Detroit Tigers and 2.5 games ahead of the New York Yankees.
