The ‘Cats opened the spring season with a strong performance.
Northwestern men’s golf opened its spring schedule on a strong note, defeating Michigan State on Jan. 31 to capture the Gantner Cup for the third consecutive year. The one-day match play event served as an important early-season test for the ‘Cats, who delivered a composed and balanced performance against the Spartans. Senior Daniel Svärd led the way with a standout showing that earned him Big Ten Player of the Week honors for the second time in his career.
The event was held at Mountain Lake Country Club in Florida and featured a morning session of foursome matches followed by an afternoon session that ultimately decided the outcome. With both teams looking to set the tone for the spring, the opening matches were tightly contested and showcased the depth on both rosters.
Michigan State struck first in the opening match, as Caleb Bond and McCoy Biagoli edged Northwestern’s Akshay Anand and Mark Gazi 1UP in a battle that went down to the final hole. Northwestern responded quickly in the second match, where Jeremy Chen and Monty Holcombe delivered a dominant performance. The duo closed out a convincing 6&5 victory, swinging momentum back in Northwestern’s favor and leveling the score.
Svärd and Isaac Lee followed with a steady and controlled performance in the third match. The pair capitalized on key opportunities and secured a win to give Northwestern its second point of the morning. In the final foursomes match, Rowan Sullivan and Ethan Tseng fought throughout the round but ultimately fell 2&1, leaving the teams tied 2-2 at the conclusion of the morning session.
With the Gantner Cup hanging in the balance, Northwestern rose to the challenge in the afternoon. The first two matches were closely contested and both ended in ties after 18 holes, allowing each team to earn a point. Archie Finnie and Holcombe battled consistently to secure one of those halves, while Tseng and Lee matched their opponents hole-for-hole in another evenly played contest.
The decisive stretch of the event came in the next match, where Sullivan and Chen delivered one of the day’s most dramatic moments. Locked in a tight battle, the duo rose to the occasion on the 18th hole, securing a crucial 1UP victory that gave Northwestern a narrow edge and shifted the pressure firmly onto Michigan State.
Svärd and Gazi made sure the Wildcats would not relinquish that advantage. Playing with confidence and control, the two pulled away late and secured a commanding 4&3 victory, officially clinching the Gantner Cup for Northwestern. The win highlighted Svärd’s leadership and consistency, as he played a pivotal role throughout the day in both sessions.
By the end of the event, Northwestern secured a 5-3 victory over Michigan State, continuing its recent success in the Gantner Cup. Ranked 44th nationally, the ‘Cats handled a 65th-ranked Spartans squad with poise and discipline, demonstrating their ability to perform in match-play situations.
Northwestern will look to carry this momentum forward when it returns to action at the Prestige at PGA West from Feb. 16-18 in La Quinta, California. With another Gantner Cup title secured and a strong start to the spring season, the Wildcats enter their next tournament with confidence and a clear focus on continued improvement.
