Manchester United’s hopes of signing Sporting CP midfielder Morten Hjulmand have taken a big hit. Just as talks seemed to be picking up pace, the Portuguese club has reportedly raised their asking price — and not by a small amount.
Sporting have reportedly made it clear that they won’t consider any offer below €80 million ($87 million). That figure matches the Danish midfielder’s release clause.
As per reports (via Calciomercato), United had earlier tabled a €40 million ($43 million) bid, confident that a deal could be struck somewhere in the middle. But now, it’s double or nothing.
United manager Ruben Amorim was hoping for a reunion with Hjulmand, having previously coached him in Lisbon.
That connection sparked early talks and helped United jump ahead of Juventus in the race. However, Sporting’s firm stance has left both clubs rethinking their next move.
Sporting are under no pressure to sell. They already let Viktor Gyokeres leave this summer, reportedly to Arsenal, and aren’t looking to lose more top names. That means it’s full price or no deal.

According to reports (via Gazzetta dello Sport), Juventus were working on a player-plus-cash deal that could include Douglas Luiz. But Sporting aren’t biting.
They’ve also had past issues dealing with Juve, which may not help their chances.

Hjulmand isn’t just another midfield name on the transfer board. Since arriving from Lecce in 2023, he has quickly become one of Sporting’s key players.
His calm style, ability to win the ball, and leadership on the pitch made him a standout.
More importantly, he fits the mold of what Amorim wants — a midfield anchor who can control games and link defense to attack. That’s something United clearly need, especially with uncertainty around their current midfield options.
The 26-year-old is said to be open to a Premier League move. His close bond with Amorim is also a major factor that could bring him to Old Trafford, if the price can be right.
