Liverpool are poised to sign highly promising 17âyearâold striker Will Wright from League Two side Salford City, according to the Athletic.
Wrightâwho netted over 50 goals across youth levels last season and made his senior debut in Salfordâs FA Cup tie against Manchester Cityâis currently undergoing a medical at Liverpool, with completion expected imminently.
Earlier in July, Liverpool submitted an initial bid in the region of ÂŁ100,000 plus add-ons, attracting intense Premier League competition from clubs such as Manchester City, Arsenal, Brentford and Burnley.
Despite Arsenal reportedly reaching a verbal agreement with Salford, Liverpool have now reasserted their position and are confident of signing the striker, who is reportedly keen to join them due to the club's proven record of nurturing young talent.
Under the proposed structure, Wright would initially join Liverpoolâs Underâ21 squad, although his progression could follow a similar pathway to recent youth signees like Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni, both promoted through the academy into higher-level training and match involvement.
For Salford City, the loss of Wright represents a blow to the ambitious project overseen by coâowners Gary Neville and David Beckham, who had recently taken full control of the club and envisioned Wright as a key part of their future structure.
