Italian biathlete Rebecca Passler has tested positive for the banned substance letrozole and is provisionally suspended, the Italian Anti-Doping Agency said ahead of Friday's start of the Milan/Cortina home Olympics.
Nado Italia said on Monday that Passler was caught in an out of competition test. There was no immediate reaction from the athlete who was part of the Olympic biathlon team.
Passler, 24, is from Anterselva, where the Olympic biathlon events will take place. The former junior world champion has competed in the World Cup since 2021 and has two relay podium finishes.
Letrozole can lower the oestrogen level but is mainly used in cancer treatment. It has been on the World Anti-Doping Agency banned list since 2008.
There has been a previous doping case with the substance in Italy when former French Open finalist and Olympic doubles champion tennis player Sara Errani tested positive for it in 2017 and was banned for 10 months. Errani protested her innocence, blaming contaminated food.
