49ers set to hire Raheem Morris as DC, reuniting him with Kyle Shanahan (paywall)
“On the heels of Robert Saleh, a disciple to a wide 9 and 4-3 defensive scheme, Morris does not present the most seamless transition. The last time he called defensive plays was in a 3-4 defense as Rams defensive coordinator from 2021-23. Los Angeles won the Super Bowl his first year there. Morris also gained experience in the “Tampa 2” system, traditionally known for its 4-3 alignment, while with the Buccaneers and has other previous 4-3 ties.
Shanahan and Morris previously coached together with Tampa Bay (2004-05), Washington (2012-13) and Atlanta (2015-16). Perhaps most notably, Morris spent those two seasons as the Falcons’ wide receivers coach under Shanahan despite having been a defensive assistant his entire NFL coaching career dating to 2002. You could call Shanahan impressed, to say the least.
The last time Shanahan and Morris were on the same coaching staff, their team went to the Super Bowl.
“The fact that he was on defense his whole career and came to be our receiver coach, it was unbelievable how cool he was,” Shanahan said. “How good he did.”
Shanahan recognized Morris early on as a rising talent. In his more formative years as an assistant to his dad, longtime NFL head coach Mike Shanahan, he recalled his countless recommendations for Morris as defensive coordinator.”
NFL insider: 49ers could lose top assistant after Raheem Morris hire
“”Some moving parts —With Raheem Morris in as 49ers DC, market is moving on Gus Bradley,” Breer wrote. “Either the Titans or Cardinals could hire him as DC, with Arizona having the edge of making him play-caller.”
49ers add big, physical wide receiver in 2026 NFL mock draft
“A big, physical WR with a massive catch radius, contested-catch ability, and the speed to separate quickly and hit top-end velocity in 2-3 steps,” Wilson wrote. “[Denzel] Boston is an effective route runner at all three levels, will run through arm tackles in space, and can outmuscle defenders in the red zone.”
Boston, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound target, checks several boxes for a 49ers offense that could be searching for a true outside presence. Wilson has him coming off the board as the fourth wide receiver selected in the draft. Boston is coming off his most productive collegiate season in 2025, hauling in 62 passes for 881 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Over four seasons with the Huskies, Boston totaled 132 receptions for 1,781 yards and 20 touchdowns, with most of that production coming over the past two years (125 receptions for 715 yards and 20 touchdowns).
“While primarily an outside threat, his size, strength, and hands make him a potential matchup problem in the slot, too. Added bonus: he’s a legit threat as a punt returner.”
49ers linked to two potential free-agent targets by PFF
“Atlanta ran outside zone at a higher rate than any other team, and Allgeier has an 82.2 PFF rushing grade on outside zones over the past two seasons, ranking sixth among running backs. The Falcons changed coaching staffs, adding Kevin Stefanski as head coach. The Browns run outside zone at a below-average rate, so a return to Atlanta doesn’t make sense…..The 49ers will need an X receiver next season if Jennings doesn’t re-sign,” Jahnke added. “Jennings has spent most of the last two seasons as their X receiver, as Brandon Aiyuk played the X position before that. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur spent most of 2008-2016 as an assistant under 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan with three different franchises, so Doubs would be a strong schematic fit with the 49ers offense.”
