“Great players change roles”: Former Liverpool striker challenges Salah’s future
Former Liverpool striker Fernando Morientes said Mohamed Salah may need to accept different role at Anfield as the club struggles this season.
Morientes shares honest view on Salah’s situation
Former Liverpool and Real Madrid forward Fernando Morientes offered advice to Mohamed Salah as questions grow around the Egyptian star’s future at Anfield during challenging campaign.
Salah has scored only four Premier League goals so far this season, a noticeable drop compared to his usual output.
He did add his second goal of Champions League league phase on Wednesday against Qarabag but concerns remain about Liverpool’s overall form.
Speaking to Tribal Football, Morientes compared Liverpool’s current situation to Real Madrid’s recent struggles explaining that both clubs are not getting the results they expect.
“Salah Can Still Influence, But Not Like Before”
Morientes praised Salah’s legacy at Liverpool calling his goal record, leadership and impact rare achievement.
However he suggested that age and the rise of new players may affect how Salah contributes in the future.
He stressed that Salah can still make difference even if his influence is not as strong as it was in previous seasons.
Morientes added that many great players become legends not only through starting every match but also through adapting to new responsibilities inside the squad.
Example of a new role
To support his point, Morientes mentioned Antoine Griezmann at Atletico Madrid explaining that the French attacker is not always guaranteed starter but still plays important part when used.
Morientes believes Salah could remain vital for Liverpool if he accepts similar supporting role.
The key question, he said, is whether Salah would agree to that change or prefer new project where he remains the main leader and star.
Liverpool’s spending not paying off yet
Morientes also spoke about Liverpool’s recent transfer spending warning that investing large sums does not always bring instant success.
He said new signings have not settled well so far and the team has struggled to find strong chemistry on the pitch.
Because of this, Morientes does not currently see Liverpool as serious contenders for either the Premier League or Champions League titles this season.
Still he noted that Liverpool’s squad has enough talent to improve quickly and the season could still change if the new players find form at the right moment.
