Locals may view Hurts through the prism of his excellence in the biggest games, but consensus from the rest of the league isn’t as generous. Of course, many of them don’t have his ring or Super Bowl MVP. Mannion will be charged with elevating Hurts on a more consistent basis. He has been credited with helping Packers starter Jordan Love and backup Malik Willis advance and with helping them become better pocket passers. It should help that Mannion played the position and that he’s done it recently. But there could be the question of whether he has enough gravitas for the stoic old soul in Hurts. Sirianni might have suggested two weeks ago that he would include the quarterback in the coordinator search, but his involvement was minimal at best, sources close to the situation said.

This should look meaningfully different from the stagnant, predictable structure the offense drifted into last season. I expect those hitch numbers to come way down … Green Bay’s system attacks linebackers with crossers, overs, glance routes, and play-action seams. We drifted toward boundary and sideline isolation throws last year. I expect the middle of the field to be a more targeted area. You’ll see concept families instead of isolated calls. The same formation will produce multiple outcomes across a game. That sequencing element, where you show one look early and target defensive adjustment later, is a defining trait of this tree and something Philly badly lacked last season.

Finally, what does this mean for the future? I don’t believe Mannion’s age and inexperience suggest he has more staying power. In fact, I’d think it’s the opposite: If the Eagles have success, Mannion could earn interviews for head coaching jobs next year. He might not have the hype of candidates considered next in line, but NFL owners are often intrigued by young offensive minds. I’m not saying Mannion will be one and done, but I think the Eagles hired a rising coach near the ground floor. As I wrote multiple times the past few weeks, the Eagles should not be focused on staying power. It’s the nature of the offensive coordinator role that those jobs turn over often.
And that also leads to the question of what happens if it doesn’t work. In that case, my guess is the Eagles might be searching for more than an offensive coordinator next year. Such is life in the NFL. This is a high-variance hire, and the Eagles are taking a big swing.

KC Concepcion, WR, Texas A&M: Concepcion is a smaller receiver with top-end speed, and waterbug-like quickness in short areas. He is dangerous in the open field after the catch. In 2025, he had 61 catches for 919 yards (15.5 YPC), and an SEC-leading 9 TDs. He was also the Aggies’ primary punt returner, and he housed two punts this past season. The Eagles desired a player like Concepcion when they drafted Ainias Smith in 2024, but obviously Concepcion is a far better prospect.

Doyle was a candidate for other offensive coordinator openings as well, including the Philadelphia Eagles’ job which he just recently pulled out of consideration for. He emerged as a prime candidate for the Ravens in recent days, overtaking other potential options like Davis Webb and Kliff Kingsbury. The connections to Johnson and Payton, two of the NFL’s top offensive minds, are obviously part of Doyle’s appeal. His lack of experience as a play-caller is by far the biggest question mark surrounding his potential in Baltimore, and there is no real way to assuage that concern until the 2026 season. Until then, Doyle will be focused on retooling Baltimore’s offense after their disappointing performance in 2025.

Johnson started out his coaching career in college, where he had stints with Utah, Mississippi State, Houston, and Florida as offensive coordinator and/or a quarterbacks coach. His first NFL coaching job came in 2021 when he was named the Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterbacks coach. Johnson held that role through the 2022 season, and in 2023, he was named the Eagles’ offensive coordinator. Johnson was fired a year later by the Eagles and was then hired by the Washington Commanders in 2024 as their assistant head coach/offensive pass game coordinator.

More changes are on the way for the Washington Commanders coaching staff. They changed offensive and defensive coordinators and now we’re seeing moves to update the assistants from last season. DBs coach/defensive pass game coordinator Jason Simmons joined the Steelers, and assistant head coach/offensive pass game coordinator Brian Johnson just interviewed with the Denver Broncos. Aaron Wilson is reporting that the Commanders have let go of three more members of the coaching staff. Assistant defensive line coach Sharrif Floyd, assistant LBs coach/pass rush specialist Ryan Kerrigan, and player development coach Pete Ohnegian are out, and more changes will likely happen before OC David Blough and DC Daronte Jones finalize their staffs. Floyd and Ohnegian followed Dan Quinn to Washington from Dallas and will now look for other opportunities. Kerrigan is a former Redskins player and holds the sack record for the franchise. He was originally hired by Ron Rivera as an assistant defensive line coach in 2022, and was retained by Quinn in his current role.
