Match Officials: Anthony Taylor to referee Manchester United vs Manchester City

Anthony Taylor has been confirmed as the match referee for Saturday afternoon’s Manchester derby clash at Old Trafford.

Manchester City will be looking to spoil the party for Michael Carrick in his first game as Manchester United head coach, after the 44-year-old replaced Ruben Amorim until the end of the ongoing season.

After a tumultuous spell in charge at Old Trafford, the Portuguese coach was dismissed of his duties off the back of an outburst against senior club officials following the 2-2 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road.

Opting to avoid a drawn-out search for an immediate long-term replacement, United chiefs turned to a shortlist of former players to take over from Darren Fletcher – who stood in as caretaker manager for a two-game period.

As for Manchester City, they continue to find themselves in the midst of an extended unbeaten run across competitions, which has recently seen them reach the fourth round of the FA Cup through a 10-1 win over Exeter, and take a 0-2 advantage in to the second-leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final with Newcastle United.

Now, ahead of the meeting between Manchester United and Manchester City, the Premier League have announced the list of match officials to oversee proceedings at Old Trafford!

Match Referee

Standing in the middle at Old Trafford in the role of match referee this weekend will be the highly-experienced official Anthony Taylor, the Premier League have this week confirmed.

Arguably the English top-flight’s leading referee, the 47-year-old Manchester-born official has so far taken charge of 23 matches this season across the Premier League, Champions League, Conference League, Champions League qualifying, and the FA Cup.

In those contests, Taylor has brandished a total of 88 yellow cards to date, with one second yellow card dismissal, one straight red card, and awarding a total of seven penalties in the process.

Anthony Taylor has officiated Manchester United and Manchester City a total of 56 and 49 times respectively, with the Sky Blue side’s record in those contests standing at 27 wins, 10 draws, and 12 defeats.

Two of those contests have come this season, with Taylor overseeing City’s 3-1 home win over Bournemouth in early November, as well as the reverse clash of this weekend’s contest – a 3-0 win for Pep Guardiola’s side against Ruben Amorim at the Etihad Stadium.

Assistant Referees

Accompanying Anthony Taylor at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime will be an assistant referee pairing of Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn, the Premier League have confirmed this week.

Video Assistant Referees

Overseeing Manchester United against Manchester City from the VAR Hub at Stockley Park will be Video Assistant Referee Craig Pawson, alongside his Assistant Video Assistant Referee Adrian Holmes.

Fourth Official

Standing between the two dugouts and managing the antics of Manchester United’s Michael Carrick and Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola, as well as their respective backroom staff and substitutes, will be referee Sam Barrott – in the role of fourth official.
