Xabi Alonso’s dismissal as Real Madrid head coach did not just catch fans and media off guard. It also came as a complete surprise to the players themselves.
According to those inside the dressing room, the squad had no prior warning that a decision had been made.
In fact, the players only learned about Alonso’s departure through the official statement released by the club.
The unexpected nature of the announcement prompted several members of the squad to take to social media to publicly say goodbye to the coach who had been in charge since last May.
How did the players react?
Among them was Kylian Mbappe, arguably the player who benefited the most from Alonso’s ideas and trust on the pitch.

Reflecting on their short time together, Mbappe shared a heartfelt message. He began by saying,
“It has been short, but it has been a pleasure to play for you and learn from you. Thank you for trusting me from day one.”
He then offered a final assessment of Alonso as a coach, adding, “I will remember you as a coach who had clear ideas and knows a lot about soccer. Good luck in your next chapter.”
Rodrygo was another player who wanted to publicly acknowledge Alonso’s influence.
He wrote, “Mister, thank you for every day we shared, for your trust, the lessons learned, and the moments we experienced.
“I wish you every success in the future. May your career continue to grow! All the best always.”
Words from top names
While many voices were quick to speak out, one notable absence was Vinicius Jr.
Despite being one of the team’s biggest stars, the Brazilian has remained silent so far, likely reflecting the several disagreements he had with Alonso during the season.
Others, however, were clear and united in their appreciation. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois shared a respectful message, saying,

“Thank you for everything. It has been a pleasure working with you, and I wish you all the best for the future. You deserve it.”
Defender Raul Asencio echoed that sentiment with his own words of support. “Thank you for everything, coach. People like you always deserve the best.”
Antonio Rudiger also joined the list of players paying tribute, stating, “Thank you for everything. It has been a pleasure and I wish you all the best for the future.”
From the captains
Alvaro Carreras followed a similar line, posting, “Thank you for everything, coach. I wish you all the best for the future.”
Captain Dani Carvajal kept his message brief but respectful, writing simply, “Thank you for everything, coach.”

In contrast, academy product Gonzalo Garcia offered a more emotional farewell, saying,
“Coach, thank you very much for everything: the lessons, the trust from day one and, above all, the opportunity you have given me. I wish you all the best.”
Federico Valverde, one of the team’s leaders, also shared his thoughts, praising not just Alonso but his entire staff.
The Uruguayan wrote, “Coach, I wish you all the best, to you and to the entire coaching staff, who have always had a great attitude.
“Good luck in everything that comes your way.”
