Real Madrid’s search for their first silverware under Xabi Alonso would have to wait a bit longer after the club agonisingly lost to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final.

However, the defeat hasn’t triggered a panic within the Real Madrid ranks, and it appears the club are ready to back Xabi Alonso as the head coach, at least for now.

Indeed, Alonso’s job is not in danger right now, having avoided a big defeat. The coaching staff has observed that the team has become united, while some on the board argue that changing a coach mid-season will not be a prudent decision.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean the club would listen to each and every one of Alonso’s wishes, one of which is to sign new players in the January transfer window.

No signings expected at Real Madrid

According to Mario Cortegana, Real Madrid’s plans in the transfer market have not changed following the defeat to Barcelona in the Super Cup final.

The club maintain they will not make any new signings in the ongoing January transfer window in order to improve the state of the team.

Real Madrid have historically avoided making any big signings in the winter transfer window and that trend should continue this year.

Although the team certainly pales in comparison to Barcelona when it comes to depth and overall quality, Real Madrid believe the team has enough quality to compete for titles.

In fact, the club’s board believes Los Blancos are still capable of competing for La Liga, Champions League and Copa Del Rey with the current setup.

This is despite the fact that the defence has endured multiple injuries while Kylian Mbappe’s brief spell on the sidelines served as a major scare for the team.

Xabi Alonso, for his part, is eager to make new signings in the January transfer window, as he wants to add more depth to the team. But as things stand, his wishes won’t be granted by the club’s management.
