SMCC hosted a major girls wrestling tournament while Jefferson, Whiteford and Erie Mason capture boys basketball victories.
Monroe County Region athletes sprung back into action in 2026 Friday.
Action on Jan. 2 included six basketball games and one of the biggest girls wrestling tournaments in the area.
The boys basketball teams from Jefferson and Whiteford moved into the finals of the Whiteford Tournament and Erie Mason also rolled to victory.
Whiteford and Jefferson fell in the semifinals of the Jefferson Tournament. They will play each other in the consolation game Saturday.
Milan’s boys also fell on the hardwoods.
St. Mary Catholic Central hosted its girls wrestling tournament.
GIRLS WRESTLING
Seven schools have champ
MONROE – Seven Monroe County Region schools produced champions at the St. Mary Catholic Central Kestrel Girls Wrestling Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 2.
Dundee had two champs – Mckenzie Mantel (100) and A’Zaria Lane (235).
Other winners were Airport’s Ella Otter (120), Flat Rock’s Chloe Hounshell (140), Gibraltar Carlson’s Tierra Taylor (105), Ida’s Abby Sotelo (170), Milan’s Amanda Pena (125) and New Boston Huron’s Madelyn Grube (190).
Taking second were Madison Palmer (140) and Olvia Kemp (190) of Airport, Ahlana Taylor (120) and Hailey Wisler (135) of Huron, Brianna Lynch (100) of St. Mary Catholic Central and Alivia Muenzer (155) of Bedford.
Karimah Rashad (190) of Flat Rock, Avalynn McCune (170) of Milan, PeggyJo Gessner (105) of SMCC Samatha Gibson (130) of Huron and Lola Cacioppo (155) of Monroe were third.

Fast starts for Jefferson
OTTAWA LAKE – Jefferson dominated the first and third quarters in rolling to a 63-42 victory over Ann Arbor Greenhills.
The Bears rang up 18 points in the opening quarter, then posted 20 in the third.
“Nice balanced win tonight,” Jefferson coach Corey Wiley said. “We shared the ball well a played nice defense.”
Brayden Burkmier led the 5-2 Bears with 15 points and Bret Gennoe tossed in 10.
Griffith lifts Whiteford
OTTAWA LAKE – Cole Griffith scored 8 of his game-high 18 points in the third quarter to help Whiteford pull away for a 56-41 win over Blissfield.
“I thought we played really sound defensively contesting Blissfield’s shooters and making sure we cleaned up the glass with rebounding,” Whiteford coach Jordan Bollin said.
Nate Andrews added 10 points for the 5-0 Bobcats, who will host Jefferson in the tournament championship game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Doom shines for Mason
ERIE – Logan Doom continued his strong play of late with 19 points as Erie Mason squared its record at 4-4 with a 66-55 victory over Lutheran Westland.
“We were able to pull away in a close game,” Mason coach Isaac Skaggs said. “The defense wasn’t to the standard we hold ourselves to tonight, but fortunately we were able to hit enough shots to come away with the win.”
Skaggs credited Maddix Wise with key defensive plays down the stretch.
Mason’s junior varsity remained undefeated with a 64-16 win led by Carl Ford led them in scoring with 15 points and Brad Weaver and Mason Hollingsworth 12 apiece.
Milan’s Talladay nets 20
TAYLOR – Landon Talladay scored 20 points, but could not keep Milan from dipping to 1-7 with a 73-56 loss to Taylor Trillium.
Trillium’s Malik Lewis poured in 41 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Jefferson falls short
NEWPORT – Alivia LeBrun scored a career-high 21 points, including four 3-pointers, but Jefferson fell to 0-6 with a 43-42 loss to Trenton.
The Bears will play Whiteford in the consolation game of its own tournament Saturday.
Whiteford falters after half
NEWPORT – Whiteford led 10-8 at the half, but was outscored 10-4 in the third quarter of a 33-25 loss to Ypsilanti Lincoln.
Freshman Macy Ovall led the 0-5 Bobcats with 8 points.
“Macy Ovall had a really solid game on both ends of the floor,” Whiteford coach Nick Kopp said. “If she keeps putting in work she will be a very solid piece for this program going forward.”
