Barcelona’s plans for the January transfer window remain far from settled, particularly when it comes to reinforcing the defence.
According to Mundo Deportivo, there is currently no full agreement within the club on which profile should be brought in to cover the absences of Andreas Christensen and the uncertain situation surrounding Ronald Araujo.
Just as importantly, there is also no sense of urgency behind the scenes to close a deal quickly.
Cautious dealing
Speaking recently, Hansi Flick acknowledged that the squad needs reinforcements to deal with key absences.
However, the Barcelona coach was careful to explain that any potential signing must be approached with caution.
From the manager’s perspective, Barcelona do need another defender, but not just any option.
Flick wants a player who represents a genuine upgrade on the current squad rather than a short-term fix that adds depth without raising the overall level.

The same idea is shared by the club’s hierarchy and the sporting department, who are determined not to repeat mistakes from previous winter windows.
No shortage of options, but no decision yet
Despite this cautious approach, Barcelona are not short of options, as several players have been offered to the club by their agents in recent weeks.
Still, the club remains calm and unwilling to rush into a decision that could limit flexibility later in the season.
One factor complicating matters is Christensen’s injury situation.
The defender is expected to be sidelined for at least four months, but his absence has not yet been fully processed within the club’s financial framework.
At the same time, the future of Marc-Andre ter Stegen could also play a role. That scenario could allow Barcelona to consider a more high-profile defensive signing.
For now, the only certainty is positional. If Barcelona do act in January, it will be for a centre-back.
