Johnson is gone, olé olé
Johnson is gone, olé olé. Brennan Johnson has officially completed his transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Crystal Palace. The move, which has been a foregone conclusion for a couple of days now, is now official after both clubs announced the move on social media. Johnson is set to be available to play for Palace in this weekend’s match against Newcastle.
We can certainly do another couple of rounds of JOHNSON DISCOURSE in the comments and feel free if that floats your boat, but at a certain level getting Johnson out the door two days into the January transfer window feels like a win. Yes, he’s Tottenham’s leading goal scorer from last season, but he’s been on the bench for much of the first half of this year, is clearly unhappy, and Spurs are able to get him out for honestly a pretty good fee. And how frequently have we complained about Tottenham waiting too long to part from players and on a terrible timetable?
I’ve said my peace on Brennan. Good scorer, gave me the biggest moment of joy I’ve had since Amsterdam, lovely human being. But he was an odd-shaped puzzle piece at the best of times, and he no longer fits in the frame of… well, whatever it is Thomas Frank is trying to build. Best he moves on, for everyone’s sake, and this feels like a win-win. He should do well at Palace, at least as long as Oliver Glasner is around.
Good luck, Brennan. Thanks for all the goals, thanks for drunkenly lifting the Europa League trophy, and thanks for this cursed image from James Maddison’s rehabilitation video. I wish him well.
