Who is the No. 23 prospect in the system?
The calendar is flipping in just a few days, and as we begin a new year, we begin a new task: the second half of the 2026 Willie McCovey Memorial Community Prospect List. With our last chapter in the books, we’re officially halfway through our quest to rank the top 44 prospects in the San Francisco Giants organization.
Rounding out the first half is right-handed pitcher Josh Bostick, who has been ranked as the No. 22 prospect in the system. That’s a rise of five spots for the recently-turned 24-year old, who was ranked No. 27 in last year’s CPL.
Bostick, who was an eighth-round pick in 2023 out of Grayson College, spent the entire season with High-A Eugene, where he amassed a 3.71 ERA and a 4.59 FIP in 24 outings. Most notable for Bostick was that he had one of the best strikeout-to-walk ratios in the system, finishing the year with 10.51 strikeouts per nine innings, and just 2.95 walks. Of the 52 Giants prospects who pitched at least 50 innings this year, Bostick’s strikeout-minus-walk percentage was eighth-best, and fifth among starters.
And speaking of starters, Bostick — who is a tall and well-built pitcher — has shown the ability the shoulder the load of a starter. Across his first two years of full-season ball, the righty has already thrown 226.1 innings, which ranks fourth among Giants prospects during that span (shoutout to John Michael Bertrand, who is outpacing the field by a whopping 70 innings).
Interestingly, Bostick had some of the most extreme splits in the system. He made half of his appearances at home, where he had a 5.11 ERA and allowed 58 hits in 56.1 innings. And he made half of his appearances on the road, where he sported a tidy 2.44 ERA with just 39 hits allowed in 62.2 innings. Perhaps more importantly, he got much better as the year went on, especially with his walks and strikeouts: from July onwards, Bostick struck out 76 batters, while walking just 10.
Like most starting pitchers in the Giants system, odds are fairly high that Bostick will have to move to a relief role at some point to facilitate an MLB career, but for now the Giants will continue to develop him as a starter, and he’ll surely open the 2026 season in AA Richmond’s rotation. But he does have the power to make a future bullpen role seem quite feasible, if and when it comes to that.
