A third concussion in the 2025 season has sent the Minnesota Vikings center to the sideline again.
Center Ryan Kelly’s first season with the Minnesota Vikings ended on Wednesday when the NFL team placed the former Alabama All-American on injured reserve for the second time this season.
Because Kelly went out with another concussion sustained during Sunday’s 16-13 victory over the New York Giants, the injury raised questions about the center’s football future.
After Kelly handled every snap for Minnesota in a season-opening 27-24 victory over the Chicago Bears on Sept. 8, he went into the NFL’s concussion protocol in the first half of a 22-6 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 14.
Kelly missed the Vikings’ 48-10 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 21. Back in the lineup against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 28, Kelly couldn’t come out for the second half of a 24-21 loss. His second concussion in 15 days landed Kelly on injured reserve.
Kelly returned to practice on Nov. 12.
After a six-game absence, Kelly returned to the starting lineup in a 23-6 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Nov. 23. Kelly started five games before a third 2025 concussion sent him to the sideline for the remainder of the season.

“He’s doing well as far as where his symptoms and things are at,” Minnesota coach Kevin O’Connell said on Tuesday. “Obviously disappointed that it happened and just going back and taking a look at not only the play but the sequences during the pla,y after the play, if there was anything we could have avoided in there. But no, just part of the game, and Ryan knows that.
“Just so much respect for Ryan as a player and just the way he, obviously, took the amount of time he did and was fighting to get back on the field and felt ready to go, and we were kind of holding back a little bit beyond that. And then when he returned to the field, just the impact he’s had on our offense over these last few games has been massive.”
Kelly joined the Vikings as a free agent in March for a two-year, $18 million contract and ended up playing in eight of Minnesota’s 15 games, with two remaining on the schedule.
The Vikings play the Detroit Lions at 3:30 p.m. CST Thursday at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
