No one seems to be discussing the major mistake the New York Yankees made.
In the midst of New York Yankees fans being apoplectic over the team's lack of activity this offseason, another severe problem has surfaced in the Bronx that is sabotaging the Yankees from within.
Last month, New York parted ways with international scouting director Donny Rowland, declining to extend his contract after it expired.
It was a decision that flew under the radar at the time considering most casual fans are not paying attention to details like that.
However, the move is having a very adverse effect on the Yankees. Why? Because up until this point, they have yet to replace Rowland, and their international talent is being ravaged by other teams — including the New York Mets, of course — as a result.
The Yankees have lost all of their top prospects from the 2026 international class, including $4.3 million shortstop Wandy Asigen, a 16-year-old wonderkid who defected for the Mets.
Asigen is ranked No. 2 in the 2026 international class overall, with some other ranking him within the top four.
Basically, the Yanks lost an elite talent and then some, which puts the microscope on New York's questionable front-office decision-making yet again.
Why have the Yankees not replaced Rowland? And were they really do dissatisfied with him that they would rather cut ties with him and be without a director than keep him aboard?
It makes very little sense, especially considering the importance of being able to land international talent. New York knows that pretty well itself.
Yankees fans are already frustrated enough with the organization for its inability to make anything happen over the first month-plus of the offseason. Not signing free agents is one thing, but being without a lead for international scouting for well over a months is beyond problematic.
New York can't afford to take its time here, either. It needs to find a way to stop the bleeding now, especially with the next cycle of international signing starting on Jan. 15.
It seems like it has been one hit after another for the Yankees this winter, and while there is still plenty of time left, I'll cite a famous phrase from Yogi Berra: it's getting late early out here.
