The Reds pitcher is seeking a second opinion on a recently developed biceps injury after MRI results were “a little murky,” manager Terry Francona said.
WASHINGTON – The Cincinnati Reds pitching depth might have taken another gut punch with the latest injury setback for Carson Spiers.
The right-hander is seeking a second opinion on a recently developed biceps injury after MRI results were “a little murky,” manager Terry Francona said.
“There is some concern about some elbow issues, ligament issues,” Francona said. “He’s going to get another opinion. It’s not cut and dried. But there is some concern.”
Spiers, who has been on the injured list since April 20 because of a shoulder impingement, had built back up and begun a minor-league rehab assignment when he experienced the recent setback over the weekend.
He was an important and versatile part of the Reds’ pitching depth since last year and opened this season in the rotation for eventual All-Star Andrew Abbott, who needed extra time after a slow-played spring buildup (following last year’s shoulder injury).
With barely two months left in the season, it’s doubtful Spiers would be ready in time to help during a stretch drive – as hoped – if he needs to be shut down again for any length of time.
The Reds aren’t operating on any estimated timelines until getting more medical feedback.
“There’s concern,” Francona said.
