FC Bayern is in debt to Karl-Heinz Rummenigge…
There is a long and deep history between Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge at Bayern Munich. Recently, Hoeneß took some time to talk through just how much Rummenigge has meant to the club, including how he helped reshape the club’s future by leaving for Inter Milan.
“I experienced pretty much everything you can experience with him. He came to FC Bayern as a young player in 1974, shortly after we had won the World Cup. We welcomed him back then. He was an incredible dribbler, but a bit nervous at first, so the goals didn’t come right away. But he matured into an absolute world-class player at FC Bayern and in the national team. He later continued his career at Inter Milan and in Geneva,” Hoeneß told Sport1’s Stefan Kumberger (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “When I became manager, FC Bayern had debts of around seven million marks. Through his transfer – that was about eleven million marks at the time – then we became debt-free. With the remaining four million, I then signed Lothar Matthäus for two million and Roland Wohlfarth for one million. The remaining million was used to create FC Bayern’s fixed deposit account. We must be infinitely grateful to Karl-Heinz for that. His transfer helped FC Bayern get healthy.”
These days, it is hard to imagine a Bayern Munich without either man. Though they have pledged to remain on the supervisory board until the club is “ready”, the day will arrive where both are fully out of the mix.
