Thankfully, the ACC season is about to start.
Only two games on Friday and neither one is particularly promising: Florida State hosts Mississippi Valley State and Cal welcomes Morgan State.
ESPN lists FSU as a 39.5 point favorite and Cal is favored by 27.5.
The Delta Devils are just 1-10, but they did take Utah Tech to double overtime and lost to Manhattan by just 7. The one win is apparently over Mississippi University for Women and we sincerely hope it is now co-ed.
The ‘Noles have lost 5 straight. If they make it 6, it’s officially time to panic.
As for Morgan State, this is a Bear on Bear matchup. Thing is, while Morgan State is just 2-8, being near the DMV means you’ll find some players, and certainly better than MSVU is going to scrape up.
Morgan State is coached by Kevin Broadus. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he coached at Binghamton, getting the Bearcats to the 2009 NCAA tournament, losing to Duke in the first round.
After that, he kicked six players off the team in September for what later turned out to involve criminal activities. Then he got in his own trouble with the NCAA for violating a no-contact period when recruiting.
He’s been at Morgan State since and has had one winning season, in 2020-21, during Covid.
So Cal, currently 10-1 with better talent, coaching, facilities and support, should win. If not, there’s something wrong.
And after this, the Bears get Columbia, which should be a much more interesting game. The Lions beat Hofstra and gave UConn a better game than we honestly expected. It was still a bad loss (89-62), but it could have been a 50 point loss.
After that, Cal hosts Louisville and should be 11-1. And that could be fun.
Common thread between the Bears and the Bears: Todd Bozeman coached at both schools.
